In recent days the cold calibration counts for NOAA-19 MHS channel 3 have risen, and they are now greater than 28000, which is the limit that has been used in AAPP since launch. Note this channel has been noisy for some years.

If you are processing NOAA-19 MHS direct readout data, you will be seeing errors of several tens of K in this channel. To correct it, you should urgently update your file mhs_clparams.dat, which is located in directory AAPP/src/calibration/libmhscl.

    Please change line 181 from

    28000, 28000, 28000, 28000, 28000

    to

    28000, 28000, 32000, 28000, 28000

Then “make dat” to copy the file to AAPP/data/calibration/coef/mhs. If you have an AAPP installation directory, you should copy it there also.

    Regards,

    Nigel

For the record – the cold counts started coming back down again after mid-2018. Currently around 25500, i.e. well below the old limit of 28000.

If you have patched the calibration file, you can keep it like that, in case the counts go back up in the future.
